Changing Tides is a program of Little Tokyo Service Center located in Los Angeles, California. We seek to inspire greater mental health discussion within the Japanese American and broader Asian American community while tackling the associated stigma. We were raised by generations of strength and hard work. It is with these values that we dare to change the way mental health is viewed. We are starting the conversation, educating the community, and changing the tides. Let’s create a new, open-minded generation.

In the summer of 2021, two artists are invited to paint a mural on the island of Shishmaref, Alaska. As they learn more about the culture and the impact of the melting permafrost that erodes away at the island each year, they begin uncovering the deeper history of the local Inupiaq people and their future in the face of climate disaster.

Kokura-ori fabrics were woven in Buzen Kokura (currently named Kitakyushu City) since the Edo Era (early 1600's). Kokura-ori was used to make "hakama" trousers and "obi" sashes that were used by the samurai class. The women and children of the Ogasawara samurai, were responsible for cultivating and spinning the cotton yarn, then weaving it into fabrics, which were in turn made into specialty items that were prized in Japan. There are written records of Tokugawa Ieyasu who favored coats used for falconry, that were made of Kokukra-ori fabrics. A Kokura outer-garment, which was part of a kyogen costume from the mid-Edo Period (18th century), is in the collection of the Tokugawa Art Museum. During Japan's Westernization movement of the Meiji Era, the "hakama" style was developed into summer uniforms for male students, using factory-woven Kokura-ori in a salt and pepper pattern woven from grey yarns. The demand for Kokura-ori cotton clothing spread across the country, and factories could not keep up with demand, resulting in the manufacture of imitation Kokura fabrics that were manufactured in other areas of Japan. Kokura-ori fabrics were manufactured for more than 300 years, but production ceased in the early Showa Era. Textile artist Noriko Tsuiki was dedicated to reviving the fabric and after much trial and error, in 1984 she succeeded in the restoration of Kokura-ori. The cotton threads are yarn-dyed, then woven in factories. Noriko Tsuiki's successors ensure that Kokura-ori will carry on into the 21st century.

Terasaki Budokan is close to its completion. Seeing and filming the old building and the early stage of construction, working on this project was a special experience for me. It was literally the whole birthing process of an important building in Little Tokyo. It was the third time I filmed Kent working on his murals, and it's always inspiring because he has so many things I don't have that I wish to have. Working with an inspirational friend gives me great stimulus to improve yourself.

Kuni and I had the opportunity to serve Little Tokyo Service Center again. This time we were asked to make a promo video to support the fundraising for a new multi-purpose gym being built in the middle of Little Tokyo. We asked our friends to participate and perform their professional skills on Aratani Stage. The video was screened at Straight Outta Little Tokyo. They named the new gym “BUDOKAN.”

Ramen District is a brand new ramen experience. You can order your favorite ramen from the most popular ramen shops. It’s the best way to eat good ramen now. Soup and noodles arrive frozen so all you need to do is just boil them. Better than dry noodles and so much better than to-go ramen. To-go ramen is lame. Don’t even think about it.

It’s been 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the Tohoku region but I honestly never had a chance to talk to anyone who survived the earthquake or visited the impacted area. Talking and working with Masako-san who started Love to Nippon Project was a precious learning experience and the opportunity to think how I can be prepared for such a devastating natural disaster that could happen to anyone at any moment.

These are participants of a calligraphy workshop that our friend Kuniharu was hosting during his artist residency program at Little Tokyo in 2018.
A friend of mine whom I met through "A Love Movement" filming is Brittney Banks, an illustrator. She recently moved to England to live together with her fiancé. This short documentary was shot as a product of cancelled job. The idea was the same, just no product advertisement, which really helped expressing her true beauty as a person and an artist residing in Venice, CA.
